Sports Fishing News

A 74 Lb striped bass, a new Virginia state record was certified at the Virginia Saltwater Fishing Tournament. Cary Wolfe's January 20, 2012 catch was certified as a new state record. It was caught in the Atlantic Ocean off Cape Henry. The catch was eventful, with the fish nearly lost because it was too large for the net. The 74-pound striper measured 56-3/4 inches in length and had a girth of 31-1/2 inches.

The International Game Fish Association has codified a new set of Release Rules to clarify and support ethical recreational angling and reduce the impact of the hobby on game fish species. The new rule sets a standard for a released catch, and makes release formats easier for tournaments to adopt. Many tournaments already use IGFA Rules as the basis for their rules.

A 342 Lb Southern bluefin tuna was recently certified as the world record by the IGFA after it was caught off Gisborne, New Zealand. The fish was caught in May of last year, but DNA testing was necessary to identify the type of species (there are three bluefin tuna species — Southern, Atlantic and Pacific). It was caught approximately 50 miles off shore.

The NOAA has announced it has begun to use an improved method to estimate the amount of fish caught by saltwater anglers. This will allow rules that fishermen follow to be based on more accurate information. Using these new estimates, NOAA will now work with the regional fishery management councils, the states, and other stakeholders to integrate these results into fisheries science and management. Beginning this year, NOAA will use the new method to calculate estimates for the Atlantic coast and Gulf of Mexico for use in fishery management and stock assessment by NOAA, regional fishery management councils and states.

A record 166 anglers participated in the 7th annual Dogfish Tournament at a Wrightsville Beach pier. The dogfish tournament began as something to fill the weekend between the NFL championship games and the Super Bowl. The dogfish, a small shark, is "the only game in town" as far as fishing goes at that time. The tournament is run by the N.C. Fishing Pier Society.
