Beach Volleyball News


The Federation International de Volleyball (FIVB) has officially released a new version of its Beach Volleyball Handbook. The purpose of the book is to help organizers of beach volleyball events. It contains all the relevant information about the rules and regulations of the game plus details about the technical aspects of the sport, press, marketing, and guidelines on the competitions.
 


Mexico and Puerto Rico took the gold at the Cayman Islands Tournament, the first event in the 2012 NORCECA circuit. Mexico’s Bibiana Candelas and Mayra Garcia and Puerto Rico’s Roberto Rodriguez and Erick Haddock took home the women’s and men’s gold medals respectively.
 


Brooke Sweat of Florida and Jen Fopma of California, the top seeds, were the big winners at the USA Volleyball Beach International Development Qualifier in Chula Vista, California March 25th. Teams that finish IDQ events in first or second place have the opportunity to represent the United States in specific NORCECA (North and Central American and Caribbean) Beach Volleyball Tour international events.
 


The College of Charleston hosted four other universities for its inaugural Sand Classic the weekend of March 24th. Sand volleyball teams from Pepperdine University, Mercer University, the University of North Florida, and the University of Alabama-Birmingham joined the host team for 45 duals matches.
 


FIVB Assigns 2015 Beach Volleyball World Championships to Netherlands. Four Dutch cities - The Hague, Amsterdam, Apeldoorn and one city to be confirmed - will host the tenth edition of the games, tentatively scheduled for June/July.
 


The Ludus Athletics Model Beach Volleyball Tournament takes place in Miami Beach March 31-April 1. It is free and open to the public. This year's lineup includes women's professionals, April Ross & Jennifer Kessy Champions, as well as 2012 Sports Illustrated model Nina Agdal.

Sports Fishing News

A Florida angler caught a 768 pound shortfin mako sharkin the keys, 25 miles off Islamorada. The fish was brought onto the boat after a four hours on 80 lbs test line.
 

A Florida fisherman recalls fishing near Flamingo with his father. He recalls a spot at the southern point of what is now Everglades National Park where fishermen hung their nets to dry. At a place where the pilings once were, the water was deeper than anywhere nearby. The hole is still there, he says, and at the change of tide, it still attracts fish.
 

After hearing about Costa Rican fishing for years, an angler went to try it himself. Tom Tatum caught a six foot sailfish on a "slow" fishing day.
 

Video and pictures of the 739 pound BlueFin Tuna caught off New Zealand. The record was certified by the IGFA. The angler, Nathan Adams, hopes that his wife will allow him to hang a cast of his catch.
 

NOAA study announcement that some say creates a program of paying people not to fish. The scientifically conducted survey seeks to measure people's perceptions as to the value of sports fishing. By arriving at a total dollar value, that value can be used in financial and cost-benefit analyses that could help protect the sport.
 

Mitt Romney's Mexican second cousin (George Romney, the former governor of Michigan, and Mitt's father was born in Mexico) manufactures and assembles fishing lures in Chihuahua. 66-year old Kent Romney has never met Mitt.

Beach Volleyball News


Brazil sweeps South American Beach Volleyball Tour in Montevideo, Uruguay. Winning three of three, the Brazilians now have nine gold medals, one silver and three bronze. They lead the South American Beach Volleyball rankings.
 


Russian star Ekaterina Khomyakova prepares for her fourth FiVB Beach Volleyball SWATCH World Tour in preparation for the London Olympics. After training in Italy and Brazil with new coach Marco Solustri, she is ready to play before home town fans at the Moscow Grand Slam.
 


Moscow prepares Poklonnaya Hill for qualifying events for the London 2012 Olympics. The FIVB Beach Volleyball SWATCH World Tour Moscow Grand Slam takes place there in June, followed by the finals of the CEV Women’s Beach Volleyball Continental Cup.
 


A profile of William G. Morgan, 1870-1942, said to be the inventor of volleyball, summarizes his background (as a believer in physical education) and his invention of "mintonnete," which was later renamed "volleyball," by Alfred Halstead. The invention took place in 1895, in Holyoke, Massachusetts.

SUP News and Upcoming Events

The Dana Point, California Festival of Whales includes the Mongoose Cup Stand-Up Paddleboard race, will take place Saturday March 3rd. In addtition to the race, the 41st edition of the festival, which celebrates the migration of the California gray whale, includes a parade, lectures, and many other events.
 

The Shamrock SUP Race takes place March 17th in Folly Beach, South Carolina. The event benefits pet Helpers and the Emerson Rose Heart Foundation. It features four races: a 10K, 5K, Kids' and a Dog SUP race.
 

New Zealand paddler Paul Jackson won a bronze medal at the 2012 ISA Stand Up and Paddleboard Championship in Peru. The event was the 4.5 km Stand Up Paddleboard Technical Race. Videos included.
 

The Stand Up for Clean Water Splash Stand-Up Paddleboard race takes place April 21 in Santa Monica. In Celebration of the Clean Water Actʼs 40th Anniversary, and Earth Day, Santa Monica Baykeeper is hosting its first annual stand-up paddleboard race and clean water outreach festival. The event will be a day of stand-up paddling including competitive and fun races, demos, lessons, SUP sea cleanup, and SUP Yoga.
 

A Stand Up Paddleboard sold for $27,500 at a charity auction. What might be the world's most expensive paddleboard was sold to benefit the Everglades Foundation, which works to conserve the wetlands of South Florida.
