The Shore Thing Stand-Up-Volley-Fishing-Sports Roundup

Once again we spotlight news in our three favorite Coastal Lifestyle sports, Stand-Up Paddle-Boarding, Beach Volleyball, and Sports Fishing.

Beach Volleyball
Cinncinati Hosts U.S. Open of Beach Volleyball September 2-4. Organizers expect about 10,000 to 15,000 people to attend the event at the Hahana Beach complex which overlooks the Ohio River. Players will be competing for a $150,000 purse.
Photos of the Bermuda Volleyball Beach Spike Fest Tournament, August 27th. A very light hearted tournament featuring teams with names like the "French Onions" and the "Hambones."

Stand Up Paddleboard
Waikiki Honors the Most Legendary Beachboy of all: Duke Kahanamoku. Honlolulu recently enjoyed the 10th annual Duke's OceanFest, which included four different ocean sports plus beach volleyball, topped off by the Hawaiian 105KINE Great Hawaiian Luau at the Waikiki Aquarium as the sun set into the Pacific Ocean. Longboard surfers participated in the Hawaiian Airlines Duke's Legends Surf Classic, won by Donald Takayama. The traditional Duke's Waikiki Ocean Mile Swim was won by Ian Dunham-Wheeler in a time of 19 minutes and one second. The Maui Jim Paddleboard Championship, 10 miles, was won by Maui's Connor Baxter, in his 18th stand-up paddle (SUP) victory in a time of one hour, 18 minutes and 25 seconds. Big Island's Jenny Kalmbach took the women's SUP line honors.
Moonlight Stand Up Paddleboard! Seatrek, Sausalito, CA., where the next full moon is September 11-12. What a terrific idea!

Sports Fishing
California Free Fishing Day Coming Up September 3rd. California may have a good promotional idea: two "free" days a year when one can fish without a license for no charge. Floridians, for whom only the salwater shoreline fishing license is free, may be envious.
Advance in Science May One Day Help Sports Fishermen. New skin test determines age of wild animals to help control nuisance animals. This may provide a better population control of nuisance animals. In this specific report, a group of scientists are studying double-crested cormorants. Federal and state agencies are trying to manage cormorant populations to reduce the birds’ adverse impacts on sports fishing, among other activities. The management efforts involve maintaining the number of breeding pairs of cormorants at environmentally healthy levels. The new skin test will enable scientists to gauge the number of birds that are of breeding age.
